A SSL certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates a website’s identity and enables an encrypted connection. Basically, any website that has a form on it has to have one to ensure your customer’s information is kept private and secure. You can tell if a website has one by looking for the padlock symbol next to the web address in the browser followed by “https” (the ‘s’ is for secure). Google will penalize websites that don’t have one and display the site as ‘Not secure’ in the url bar.
